2024 is here! A Surf Life Saving year packed with memories to fulfil, we can not wait to get started.

This edition of Splash Tidings has important information regarding our National Pool Championships, please take a look. We look forward to delivering more, exciting news at our National Update 2024 at the iconic Sandy Park, Exeter on February 3rd.

Heroes Of The Surf Awards & National Update

We’re excited to welcome our Trainer Assessors, Coaches and Club Volunteers to Sandy Park for the 2024 National Update, more information will be released about the work we are doing after the event. This followed by our annual Heroes of the Surf which is back following a break, the evening is held to recognise the unsung heroes of the Surf Life Saving.

Stillwater Event Changes – Youth

Last year we had record numbers in our Youth age group that led to 10 hours plus on poolside for our athletes and officials. Due to the welfare of our officials, coaches, parents and athletes we looked at alternatives to support the event for 2024. Dates, alternative venues, and pool hire over a longer period were looked at. However, there wasn’t a positive solution for 2024.

After many meetings, the Officials Committee made the decision for 2024 only, that the following outcome will be in place for this year’s Youth Pool Championships. The following information is extracted from the committee minutes.

The committee discussed various combinations, the following outcomes for the 2024 Youth Championships were decided as there was not going to be enough time to hold all events:

  • Keep: U13/U15 100m Obstacle
  • Remove: U17/U19 200m Obstacle and U17/U19 Super-Lifesaver.

The U17/U19 can compete in the Senior Championships in these two events. (Added to this, any U15s who have declared for the GBR team and need a time can do so at the Senior Event.)

  • Keep: All Obstacle Relay events.

And to finish, a poem for these gloomier days, to reminisce brighter days competing on the beach.

Sonnet 2023 (Masters National Surf Championships, Branksome Chine) By Paul Hills, Gylly SLSC

Let Gylly compete on a summer’s day
Support for all and strong new friendships made
Yet rough winds and seas swipe sad skis away
As winter training muscle memories fade

A hug, a smile, a shout does spur you on
To heights and depths you thought belonged to others
Two long days passed sore muscle pains now gone
But bonds in place new sisters, new brothers

Inspired by age groups over three score
My high numbers feel lower in this tribe
What sports and pleasures did I have before
To thwart the ageing mirrors still describe

So already thoughts turn towards next year
Go Gylly* friends the course is ours to steer.

*and Bude and Branksome and every club small and large that showed up and made it what it was.
