Professor Michael Tipton receives Ireland Medal

“Drowning research saves lives,” according to Lifesaving Foundation Secretary John Connolly “and no one epitomises this better than Mike Tipton.”

The 2019 Ireland Medal was recently presented to Professor Michael Tipton MBE at a special ceremony in Waterford City in recognition of his long and exceptional service to saving lives from drowning. In addition to his survival research at Portsmouth University, Mike is a Trustee and Director of Surf Lifesaving GB. He is the author of two classic lifesaving books – Essentials of Sea Survival and The Science of Beach Lifeguarding.

Attending the ceremony, SLGB Chairman, Pete Lawrence said “Mike’s research ensures our life saving practices are evidence based and fit for purpose. His advice has ensured that the skills and fitness of our surf lifeguards sets a high bar when it comes to keeping our beaches and communities safe”
