Safeguarding Update

Safeguarding Training for SLSGB Coaches

SLSGB are now recommending that our Coaches take additional safeguarding training.  Safeguarding training is to ensure our Coaches are equipped to deal with any concerns that may arise in our clubs and also to ensure best practice within our clubs.  Sports Coach UK offer Safeguarding training for Coaches in many locations across the country.  The training takes 3 hours to complete and lasts for 3 years, there is then an online refresher course to complete which lasts for a further 3 years.  The price varies depending on the location but is around £30 for the initial 3 hour, face to face training.  Please follow the link to find a course near you.

Please let the SLSGB office know if you complete this training or if you hold an alternative safeguarding award so that we can record it on your records on MIS

DBS Checks

Clubs are getting ready for another busy season on the beach and this is the time of year to check that all DBS checks are up to date.  If you require an up to date report of the DBS checks within your club please email

Not everyone within the clubs needs a DBS check, each role should be risk assessed to identify the need for a check.  Please use the guidance information to help in your risk assessment of roles within your club.

DBS Update Service

Once a DBS has been applied for, through the GBGroup (the umbrella body that SLSGB use for DBS checks), you can register for the update service with the DBS.  This service means that you will be able to give other organisations, that you might volunteer for, your DBS details and they’ll be able to check the DBS status online, rather than you having to apply for a new one.  It will also mean that instead of needing to apply for a new DBS through SLSGB every 3 years, as long as there is no change to your DBS status, you will not need to apply for a new one.  Alternatively, if you are already registered with the DBS Update Service, please complete the contract (link below) and return to SLSGB and you will not be required to complete a new DBS.

You have up to 19 days after the certificate is issued to register for the update service, after this date, you will not be able to register.  Registration is free for volunteers and lasts for 12 months, after this date, you will need to register for the service again.

Once you have registered for the service, please complete the contract and return to the National Safeguarding Manager

As the planning for our 2016 events is well under way, we are looking at our safeguarding provision for all our nipper, youth and open events.   If you will be attending any of the pool or ocean events this year and you have a safeguarding qualification or have a safeguarding background, please contact Lou Johnson, National Safeguarding Manager
