What is Junior Lifeguard?

  • Junior Lifeguard is Surf Life Saving GB’s newest youth-centred programme, run by trained and experienced lifesavers. It’s purpose is;
  • To educate the 7-14 year old holiday public about beach and water safety.
  • Provide a safe educational activity for young people whilst on holiday. In this way making the holiday a lot safer for them.
  • To teach them how to use the sea in a more productive recreational manner. To enjoy the holiday experience more and encourage them to want to do more.
  • To train the local youth to be educators and all the benefits thereof. At the same time offering a salary for doing a job.
  • Hopefully training future lifeguards as well.6. To raise money for the local club to make the club a focal point of the community getting more youth involved in a safe and educational activity.

Lifesavers of the future

We value the energy and enthusiasm that young people have and we are working to develop those natural attributes through the SLSGB National Youth Development Group.

The Youth Development Group develops educational programmes for youngsters and the community at large. This involves working with sports coaches, life saving instructors and volunteer helpers to develop inter-generational relationships in communities.

It is vital that we encourage our young people to continue in Surf Life Saving to become the volunteers of the future, running community surf life saving clubs.

The opportunities provided by SLSGB include:

  • An annual Leadership Development Camp
  • A chance to go to the Leadership Development College in Australia
  • Awards, both community and professional including Junior Lifeguard
  • Career opportunities as beach lifeguards
  • Support and personal development in coaching, instruction and leadership

Without doubt, surf life saving offers a fantastic way of life, an active healthy lifestyle, respect across generations and career and training opportunities producing responsible and community minded young people.

Fundamentals Activities - Resource for Nipper Coaches

All activities in the Fundamentals Activities resource are intended for use by an accredited SLSGB coach only. Do not attempt to carry out these activities without the correct level of supervision. The coach must adhere to the recommendations of the National Safety Guide, which includes completion of a thorough risk assessment prior to commencing any of the activities or exercises indicated in this booklet.

This resource is to be used by coaches delivering Nipper activities who aim to develop generic movement skills through structured fun activities and games. It is recommended that Coaches include such activities in sessions approximately twice a week. These skills for development fit into the first base building block on the SLSGB Life Saver Pathway for Development model.

The Fundamentals Activities Booklet can be purchased by completing a Manual Order Form and sending a cheque for £10 made out to SLSGB.

How it works…

  • Variation 1 activity should be from the Fundamentals Activities booklet
  • Variation 2 should be with participant/group input towards creating and participating in an adapted Fundamentals activity while helping others feel welcome & encouraged
  • Variation 3 should be achieved through a self-set Life saving sport specific goal within a given Fundamental skill for an individual and/or for helping others to develop the given skill point.

  Surf Safety Skills Log Book

How to Use the Skills Log Book…

The booklet is designed to be used as a means of identifying an individual’s progression in skill levels. When an individual consistently shows that they can achieve the criteria, it may be ‘signed’ off and the individual will be recognised by SLSGB as achieving that Surf Safety Skill Level.

Who can sign off the skills for the skills log book?

The individuals ‘day to day’ SLSGB coach may initially ‘sign off’ that an individual is consistently achieving the respective skill/s and sign their section of the book for in recognition of achievement.

  • Verification of level 1-3 - A level 2 discipline specific coach/or above that is not the ‘normal’ coach of the individual, must then verify that they have observed the given skill level of the individual.
  • Verification of level 4-5 - Verification must be undertaken by a level 3 coach or above.

Provision of Awards

Upon satisfactory verification, the normal coach may then provide the individual with the appropriate certification of their respective award level (available through the SLSGB head office).

The Surf Safety Skills Log Book can be purchased by completing a Manual Order Form and sending a cheque for £15 made out to SLSGB. Discounts apply for bulk buys, enquire within. Alternatively, it can be downloaded for you to print.
