St Agnes Surf Lifesaving Club secures £50,000 from sporting legacy fund
Our second oldest Surf Life Saving Club in the UK, St Agnes SLSC, has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.
St Agnes SLSC have been awarded £50,000 of National Lottery funding, enabling them to upgrade the facilities at their club house including brand new changing areas supported by renewable energy initiatives to improve sustainability and an enhanced “dry area” in the club house to support training and development. The funding also allows the club to create a beach classroom for the local community.
Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for Cornwall.
“This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in the South West. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”
Club Chairman, Steve Havers, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our premises to provide a hub for surf lifesaving activity and an improved facility for the local community”
Founding member David Docking said “Being one of the first members of St Agnes Surf Lifesaving Club, I am delighted that the club has successfully secured funding to reinvest and improve the club house, here’s to the next fifty plus years!”
Trevor Greenslade reminded us “the original club house used to be a wooden hut and the ground was dug out by hand to create a flat platform for the base, it’s fantastic how the club continues to grow.”
The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.
The St Agnes Surf Lifesaving Club is one of hundreds of projects across England benefitting from lottery investment through the second round of the Inspired Facilities fund. And Sport England today launched a further £10 million funding round to help local community sports groups to upgrade their facilities.
