SLSGB leads on event water safety research

The Surf Life Saving GB team recently hosted representatives from across a range of watersports to lead a workshop to create a guidance document for safety management at water-based events.

The project, led by Surf Life Saving GB with support from ROSPA and the University of Derby and generous sponsorship from Sportscover, seeks to create an overarching strategic framework of good practice. The event was a culmination of six months’ work and brought together national governing bodies, leading safety experts and event operators to agree a common approach to event water safety. The document will cover a range of events from small community level to large commercial initiatives.

John Clark, the principal author, now has the task of producing a draft by the New Year, ready for the work to be launched at RoSPA’s Conference on 26 April 2012. The work will provide important guidance for clubs and members wishing to provide water safety cover for events.

Esther Pearson, Chief Executive of SLSGB said: “SLSGB is proud to be leading on this project and was greatly encouraged by the huge commitment to safety and the open and collaborative approach from everyone at the workshop.”
