So you think you've got what it takes?

Being a beach lifeguard incorporates fitness, life saving skills, life support, people and management skills, vigilance and service. All of these are available through the Surf Life Saving GB Beach Lifeguard Award, the best lifeguard award in the UK and the preferred award for lifeguards for our partner, the RNLI. The SLSGB Beach Lifeguard Award is an internationally recognised qualification and is accepted in Australia and New Zealand.

The best way to train for this qualification is to join your local surf life saving club who will be able to train and give you time to build up your skills. You will learn

  • A thorough knowledge of the beach and ocean environment
  • Rescue skills
  • First aid
  • Resuscitation
  • How to deal with emergency situations
  • Radio techniques
  • And you will develop the high level of fitness required

Alternatively, you can pay for an week long intensive training course through one of the many surf life saving clubs or commerical centres affiliated to SLSGB.

All our awards and qualifications are regularly moderated to ensure that our instruction and examination standards are kept to the highest level ensuring that we are producing beach lifeguards of suitable quality for the RNLI. We have a national governing body medical advisor who ensures that the SLSGB Beach Lifeguard qualification is, and will remain the best award for beach lifeguards.
