SLSGB is sad to announce the death of one of its oldest and most experienced life members. John W F Tanner was well known to many people in Surf Life Saving and greatly respected by colleagues throughout the organisation. He passed away at his home in Devon on Sunday 23rd April 2017, just a few days before he would have reached his 90th birthday. John was a very dedicated life member who served SLSGB in a number of roles over a very long and distinguished career. He was a member of the National Executive and Board of Directors for many years, with a keen interest and expertise in constitutional and governance issues, and his advice was often sought when considering the impact of constitutional and bye-law changes. As a very active man, he was also for many years the Honorary Chief Gear Steward for the Association, and was always present at National Championships to ensure that everything needed to successfully run a major event was always in place. John strongly represented the interests of the Devon Region and right up until his death was the President of Devon Surf Life Saving. Indeed just before his death he was delighted to be asked to be nominated again as President in Devon’s 50th year. He will be sorely missed by his colleagues both within Devon and nationally.
